No doubt, Genevieve Nnaji is a delectable actress. An actress who in
one fan’s words "oozes confidence whenever she appears in a movie". This
said, one must wonder why she is not married like her colleagues in the
business especially considering the African notion on marriage. To
limit it to our own Nigeria, it is a known fact that a woman in Nigeria
who is not married before her 30th birthday automatically becomes the
talk of the town.
Her parents, friends and relatives begin to persuade her on the need to fulfil that obligation if not for anything, so she’ll not disgrace them. In the case of celebrities, there are a dozen and one probable reasons why they may encounter problems in this department. That is why the case of Genevieve is peculiar.
In her own case, she has been linked to a few men over the years. She was said to have dated a highly placed politician some years back but recently, it has been Genevieve and the "kokomaster" himself, D'banj. Rumours of an alleged relationship started about the time D’banj wanted to shoot the video for his song "fall in love". Genny's appearance in the said video and the kiss she shared with D'banj in the video all but confirmed that both celebrities were indeed in a relationship. The pair were said to have started dating as far back as 2010, but broke up due to D'banj's "commitment issues" fast forward to December 2013, it was finally confirmed by various sources that D'banj and Genevieve were officially a couple again.
All said and done, one is forced to ask the question, when will Genevieve get married? When will she take the walk down the altar as some of her colleagues have done? If D'banj is the right one for her, why hasn't she made it official? Or is she waiting for D'banj to pop the question? Why can't she take the initiative and propose? These are some of the questions that go through one's mind if you think about Genny's spinsterhood. We must also remember that almost all actresses that could be considered Genny's mate in the industry have all gotten hitched in recent years. Ini Edo, Dakore Egbuson, Uche Jumbo, and Mercy Johnson have all found the need to "settle down" leaving Genny as the only one in her "class" who is still single.
Though it is not uncommon abroad to see an actress who is at the top of her game remain single so as to focus more on developing her career, names like (Cameron Diaz, Mary louise Parker Winona Ryder and Sheryl Crow come to mind. But actresses like Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba and our own Omotola Jalade Ekeinde have proved that marriage is not a hindrance to having a successful career. We must also remember that Genevieve is a mother. She has a daughter from a previous relationship. Maybe her experience with the father of this girl has made her swear off men but she must remember that one bad experience is not enough to swear off marriage completely. Somewhere out there is the right man for her.
